Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic awarded the Gold Medal for outstanding contributions to public and cultural activities to prominent Austrian writer Peter Handke, and reminded that Handke has stood by Serbia since 1996 and "suffered because of Serbia and the Serbian people." We are blessed that the man who turned down many honors received a medal of friendly Serbia and the Serbian people, said Nikolic. Pointing that the distinguished guest suffered because of Serbia and the Serbian people, Nikolic said that it takes great courage to stand by Serbia since 1996, constantly and forever. Yugoslav and Serbian people enriched me as a person. I was nobody's victim, Serbian people are the victims, said Handke while thanking the Serbian President for the award​

Der serbische Präsident Tomislav Nikolić hat dem österreichischen Schriftsteller Peter Handke die Goldmedaille für herausragende Beiträge zu öffentlichen kulturellen Aktivitäten verliehen. Nikolić betonte dabei, dass Peter Handke seit 1996 Serbien unterstützt, und dass er „wegen Serbiens und des serbischen Volkes gelitten hatte“. „Wir sind gesegnet, dass der Mann, der viele Ehrungen nicht annehmen wollte, gerade den Orden des freundlichen Serbiens und des freundlichen serbischen Volkes empfang“, so Nikolić, laut dem man viel Mut brauchte, Serbien seit 1996 beizustehen. „Ich war kein Opfer, das serbische Volk serbische Volk war ein Opfer“, sagte Peter Handke bei der Preisverleihung.​
